Investment Summary as of October 31, 2016

U.S. stocks in the S&P 500 Index saw their first monthly decline since February; declining 1.8% in October. International developed market stocks in the MSCI EAFE Index were down 2.1%. Bonds in Barclays Capital U.S. Aggregate Index declined 0.8%.

The Diversified Fund and Endowment Investment Fund declined 1.7% for the month, in step with the broad markets and the benchmarks. The Funds are up 5.5% year-to-date versus a benchmark return of 6.0%. Detractors from benchmark relative performance have been:

  • An underweight to higher dividend yielding securities, including telecommunication services companies and utilities in the U.S. stock portfolio.
  • An allocation to private equity and private real estate in the U.S. stock portfolio.
